To get started in the oil industry is easy with the right information and you don’t always need experience either, the truth is that if you are in good physical shape, hardworking and willing to get your hands dirty, you should have no trouble getting started

Despite the economic clim.ate, oil companies are spending millions of dollars everyday looking for more oil. It is estimated that in 2009, worldwide $400 billion will be spent looking for more oil. With figures like that there is no sign of the oil industry slowing down.

Like most careers if you don’t have experience you will have to start at the bottom and work your way up. For entry level you are looking at roustabout jobs which is like a general laborer however can still earn around US$50,000 per year which is better than many white collar jobs.

The first set of skills and job you  of a roustabout you will want to look for a roughneck position. Roughneck’s still do a lot of manual labor however they supervise the rousabout’s and that is what you want to aim for next.  Once you acquire the next set of skills you will want to try and help out and move up to the more specialized positions like the derrickhands and drillers.

If you work hard and have the right attitude you can work and be promoted up the ladder to driller, whi9ch is the 2nd highest rank on an oil rig within 5 years.

Offshore oil rig also offer many other career opportunities; if you have a trade or  technical certificate you can get a job in the electrical department or in the ,otor room. People need to eat so a good chef is always required to feed the crew, a medic is always needed on board too. Despite modern technology, an oil rig job is still a pretty hazardous place to work in. Accidents happen, and a medic always has work to do.

Anyone with the right attitude can gain employment in the oil industry, just start small, be eager to learn and work hard. Once you prove yourself, you can move to the more lucrative offshore drilling jobs.
